Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is suffering an injury that has raised concern among fans and teammates. The incident occurred during game 4 2025 playoffs against the New York Knicks . Jayson Tatum is expected to miss a long stretch of time after tearing his right Achilles tendon during the playoffs.
Team officials said that Tatum is still being checked to see how serious the injury is. Head coach Joe Mazzulla explained that the team wants to be careful with his recovery. Tatum has been a big part of Boston’s championship hopes and has been putting up strong numbers this season. If he has to miss a lot of time, it will really hurt the Celtics.
Recovery for an Achilles tear typically takes 9 to 12 months which means Tatum will likely miss most, if not all of the upcoming season. This is a big setback for Boston and the team since they rely on his skill and leadership. While the Celtics are hopeful he will come back strongly, fans probably won’t see him play again until late in the 2025–2026 season.
In my opinion and I think many others’ opinions, without Tatum the Celtics will have to change how they play and rely on other players to step up and do better since their star leader is in recovery. Jaylen Brown will need to take on more of the scoring and players like Derrick White, Kristaps Porziņģis, and Jrue Holiday will have to take bigger roles on both offense and defense. The team still has talent so they can stay competitive but it’ll be much harder to get to the level of a championship team without Tatum. I think personally that Boston can still fight for a playoff spot but their chances of going deep in the postseason will be much lower unless the rest of the team consistently plays at their best and steps up to fill the gap left by Tatum.
