Journalism at North High

In Mr. Honsantner’s journalism class, students from a wide range of attitudes and skills come together to produce the latest news. Many students enjoy the class, especially those who are skilled, or interested in improving their writing, photography, and even storytelling.

In our journalism class, students are always working on different projects at the same time. Some people are taking photos, others are writing stories, and a lot of the time people are working in groups and helping each other out or giving feedback. You might see someone editing pictures while another group is planning interviews or finishing an article before a deadline. We help each other so our school news website can be better. Students in this class don’t just focus on what happens inside the room, we also go out and cover things around our school and community, like basketball games, volleyball, and football. We also report on bigger topics like ICE, Iran, and Afcon, and even create podcasts to talk about these issues. This matters because it shows how students work together to tell real stories and bring attention to things happening both in our school and in the world around us.

The class creates an inclusive and productive environment for students to explore new things. A few students might find the class more challenging, particularly the long writing assignments, editing, or meeting deadlines. These students may struggle with organizing ideas, or completing projects. But thankfully, the class is more than just writing, so students can take on different tasks in which they are skilled, or they can cover stories in different ways that may be more effective. The class also encourages students to pursue collaborative projects, and teaches students to help one another especially if they lack skills for a certain project.

A key part of the class is teaching students how to find reliable, and trustworthy information, by exploring different types of articles and writing, including interviews, research, etc. Additionally they are taught the most effective ways of incorporating different types of evidence into their own work,  this helps students analyze the unique writing styles, and allows them to improve how they structure their own work. This not only helps students improve in the class, but also teaches them valuable skills for other classes, and future endeavors.

The class shows that there is more than one way to tell a story, or to get a message across. It reflects a mix of experiences and skills. While there may be a difference in how students view the class, everyone is developing valuable skills, and improving other skills like communication, creativity, and teamwork.
