North High Fashion!

Introduction!

Over this semester I’ve noticed the various ways students at North High School choose to express themselves through fashion.  Out of curiosity I interviewed a few students whose style stood out to me the most and asked them to fill out a google form about their fashion. Here’s what they said!

Milene Novoa (Senior)
Milene Novoa (Senior)

Milene describes her fashion as taking elements from different styles and combining them, such as street wear, y2k, and emo/scene.

She takes inspiration from 2000s rock and metal artists such as Limpbizkit and MCR. Her style consists of baggy clothing, over accessorizing, with the main color scheme being red, white, blue, and black. Milene often buys her clothes from Hot Topic, Hollister, H&M, and thrift stores.

When and why did you begin styling yourself the way you do?

  • “I started styling myself in the way I wanted to my sophomore year, only really embracing it fully early into my junior year! I began to shop more frequently and was able to buy my own clothing without my moms influence which helped me express myself in a way that felt more natural for me.”

Are you satisfied with your current style?

  • “I am very satisfied with my current style, and if possible going more in depth into the scene and emo style is something I’d like to do!”
Sarina Soderlund (Senior)
Sarina Soderlund (Senior)

Sarina has a very diverse sense of fashion and describes herself as alternative.

Her most noticeable styles are coquette, softgirl, punk, emo/scene, and cottagecore. In other words, she will wear anything as long as it’s cute

. She takes inspiration from artists such as Melanie Martinez and My Chemical Romance and games including Silent Hill and Fatal Frame. Sarina prefers to wear clothing items that are hyperfeminine, often avoiding wearing pants and opting for dresses and skirts. Her highlighted accessories are headbands and Mary Janes. Most of her items are thrifted and shops from various online stores.

When and why did you begin styling yourself the way you do?

  • “When I started 7th grade I started to branch out with my self expression. It was Covid and I had nothing else to do and that’s also when I stopped caring about anybody’s opinions so it went hand in hand.”

Are you satisfied with your current style?

  • “Yes!! But I always want more clothes cause I LOVE fashion!”
Harriet Adu (Senior)
Harriet Adu (Senior)

Harri’s main style is Decora/Decora Kei! Decora fashion focuses on many accessories (mainly hair clips), heavy layering, and can range all over the color scale. They primarily do their shopping online buying from stores like Ebay and ACDC RAG for clothing. Harri also emphasizes that accessories can be found anywhere even making some them self! Their main source of inspiration comes from other decora fashion wearers such as @ozo_ni, @kurebayashii, and @cybr.grl. Harri also serves as inspiration for others who aspire to achieve the decora fashion even gaining popularity on Pinterest (@harribo_gumbear)!

Favorite clothing item?

  • “LITERALY EVERYTHING I WEAR IS MY FAVOITE but I ESPECIALLY love my yellow fitted graphic tee from Ebay that has a buncha colors on it n’ says peace love and believe n stuff I love it. I ALSO love my purple sweater (im wearing it rn) I got it from Charlotte Russe during like freshman year im never letting it go. I ALSO love my clock ring and my googly eye glasses AND my purple and blue + checkerboard patterned big bow that I just got from the thrift store (savers) in like october. I LOVE MY CLOTHES”

When and why did you begin styling yourself the way you do?

  • “I feel like I always dressed a little differently than everyone else, but it started amplifying in middle school, especially. I was dressing Decora before I even knew there was a name for it, and I would just wear multiple hairlips at a time (around like 4-6 hairclips) on my head before i randomly looked up “lots of hairclips on head) one day, and scrolled down far enough to be blown away by Decora fashion for the very first time. I unlocked free will, and started goin crazy putting as many hairclips as I could on my head. The way I dress has always been a vessel of the most accurate way I can express myself for me (other than writing), and how I look on the outside is a near identical depiction of how I see everything in my head. I also love the joy + inspiration that my style seems to bring other people!!!”

Are you satisfied with your current style?

  • “I am EXTREMELY satisfied with my current overall style, but I have been experimenting with becoming even MORE of a maximalist lately (i’ve been looking for more giant bows, and started a perler bead hobby for more creative freedom + customization with my hairclips and accessories):”
