Growing up in impoverished Detroit, Joseph Bruce (Violent J) and Joseph Utsler (Shaggy 2 Dope) rapped on the streets together, inspired by Beastie Boys, N.W.A., and their local scene. To distinguish their group from local gangsta rap acts, they began exploring horrorcore themes not only did it help them stand out, but it also created an emotional outlet for its members to confront the violence and poverty that was a part of their childhood. One example of them confronting these themes is in the song Piggy pie one of the lyrics say “People in my city, they fight for their meals. He sleeps on a mattress stuffed with hundred dollar bills. A richie is the devil, he never really made it. So I’m a take his money stack and stuff his face wit’ it.” This pretty much means they think rich people have so much money so why not help people struggling instead of buying expensive useless things.
Another thing people say is that the fans of icp also known as juggalos and juggalets are sub-human. Shaggy sums it up in this quote “The biggest misconception from people looking from the outside at Juggalos is that Juggalos aren’t people, you know what I’m saying?” Shaggy 2 Dope tells Exclaim! “It’s just like, we could sell a million, two million records, all those people are gonna say is, ‘Oh you only sold them to Juggalos.’ You know what I’m saying? We could sell out a f’ing stadium, and they’d be like, ‘Oh it doesn’t matter, you only sold it to Juggalos. Who cares? How does that make sense, you know what I’m saying? Juggalos are sub-humans or something? You know what I’m saying? It’s like, Juggalos are just as significant as anybody else, you know what I’m saying? A Juggalo is a person.” (quote from Exclaim!)
One other thing is that people hate on ICP for no reason “Decades into his career Shaggy has grown accustomed to the hate, though even he can’t quite pinpoint where it comes from. While it would be easy to blame classism, he points out that all walks of life enjoy the Juggalo lifestyle.” (quote from Exclaim!) People try saying being a juggalo is being in a gang as well to the point they were put on the gang list by the official FBI at one point in 2011. This caused icp to sue the fbi and they won making the fbi take them off the gang list.
Some people say ICP is gross for some songs having suggestive themes but it’s not a big deal their adults making songs about adult topics. In my opinion if you dont like it then dont listen to it! People also get mad about the fact they had beef with eminem for some reason even though they already made up and said they both respect each other.
