    First Year Teachers In Their Own Words.

    Teachers talk about their strategies and teaching styles..

    We interviewed two new teachers at North about their experiences leading up to this year, and about how their first year teaching is going.

    What is your name?

     

    First and last name: Iva Juka  

    My students call me Ms. Juka. 

    How many years of teaching experience do you have, and what grade Levels or subjects have you taught?

    In my first year of teaching within a college-run program, I had the privilege of completing my student teaching at Framingham High, where I instructed Freshmen in English 1 and Juniors in American Literature. At North High, I teach two sections of English III, two sections of English IV, and a Creative Writing class that includes a mix of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.

    How many years do you intend to teach at North High School?

    I would like to stay here for as long as I can!

    How has this year’s experience been for you as a teacher?

    The past couple of months have marked a journey of continuous learning and growth. I’ve had the opportunity to develop and refine my teaching skills, covering everything from lesson planning to classroom management. I’ve forged meaningful connections with both my students and my colleagues. The unwavering support from my colleagues, mentors, and the school community has been invaluable.

    Despite the expected hurdles, my love for teaching and a strong sense of purpose in shaping my students’ futures have remained rock-solid. It’s an incredibly fulfilling career, and I’m genuinely proud to be a part of it.

    What do you expect from your students this year?

    This year, I hold my students to high expectations and believe in fostering a classroom where learning is enjoyable and engaging. I expect them to actively participate in class actively, bringing their unique perspectives and ideas to discussions. Critical thinking and a strong work ethic are fundamental, but so is maintaining a sense of fun in our learning process. I encourage them to see challenges as opportunities for growth and embrace a love for literature and writing. With mutual respect, a positive attitude, and a bit of humor, I want to create an environment where we work hard, learn, and have a great time.

    What does active engagement in class mean to you, and how do you encourage it among your students? How do you encourage participation from all kids in your classroom by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment?

    Active engagement in my classes is essential. It means more than just being present; it’s about participating, asking questions, sharing ideas, and trying to connect with the subject matter. I encourage this by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every voice is valued. I encourage open discussions and provide opportunities for collaborative learning. I also integrate various interactive activities, from group assignments to multimedia presentations. Through these methods, I aim to instill a passion for learning and a sense of ownership in my students, inspiring them to be active, eager participants in their education.

    How do you respond when one or a few students predominate class discussions while others rarely participate?

    When a few students dominate class discussions while others participate less, I actively encourage broader participation. I employ a mix of strategies, such as individual check-ins to understand student perspectives, varied participation opportunities, and balanced questioning to ensure everyone has a chance to engage. I also foster a supportive environment where all contributions are valued, boosting quieter students’ confidence. Ultimately, I aim to create an inclusive classroom where students feel heard and empowered to share their thoughts.

    Alexis Henao

    How many years of teaching experience do you have, and what grade

    levels or subjects have you taught? 

    This is my first year teaching. I teach Art. Grades 10-12

    How many years do you intend to teach at North High School?

    I’m still deciding. 

    How has this year’s experience been for you as a teacher?

    It’s been challenging. I have worked in classrooms as a Para-educator for the last four years. I am learning to write lesson plans, grades, etc, this year.

    What do you expect from your students this year?

    I want them to be proud of what they do in Art. Many students don’t think they are creative or artistic.

    Please give me a quick rundown of your educational history and

    teaching credentials.

    I graduated from Anna Maria College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art. I am currently teaching on an Emergency License. I need to pass the MTELs before I have a teaching license. 

    What does active engagement in class mean to you, and how do you

    encourage it among your students?

    Active engagement in class means that students are participating and engaging in class.

    How do you encourage participation from all kids in your classroom by

    creating a welcoming and inclusive environment?

    You need to build rapport with all students from the first day. Students who trust you will feel more comfortable engaging and participating in class.

    How do you respond when one or a few students predominate class

    discussions while others rarely participate?

     I will call on students individually.
